Artist collective “Propaganda 2008” exhibit at the Art Center/South Florida
Printmaking installation to run the month of November with opening reception on
Saturday, November 8th 2008, 7–10pm.
The Propaganda Collective — presided by Chairman Panda, in alliance with the National Corndog Federation, and under the auspices of Lips, Inc. — would like to invite you to the opening reception for “Propaganda 2008.” The event takes place on November 8th at the Art Center/South Florida, 924 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, FL. Pabst Blue Ribbon will sponsor part of the event.
This art show consists of ephemera and print-inspired installations by three artists, with the main theme of propaganda as perceived individually by each.
The National Corndog Federation, devised by artist Aimee Sauer, represents 50’s all-American advertising/propaganda. Her installation focuses on consumption and consumerism while playing with kitsch and sexual innuendos.
At the other extreme, Chairman Panda, an installation by Roxy Ramos, is inspired by
Chinese Cultural Revolution propaganda — only now instead of a proletarian cultural revolution, the message promotes a hedonistic “sensual” revolution in which the “Chairman” character encourages wealth and “the good life.” The installations of Ramos and Sauer represent propaganda in extreme opposites, where East meets West.
Lips Inc., an installation by Lazaro Amaral, is the amoral center of the previous two concepts. Here, lips and other symbols of physical pleasure, in an expression of sexuality and consumption, feed the spirit of the installation as a whole.
Additionally, Sauer, Ramos and Amaral will install a display in the large window above the Art Center, in which dancer Manuel Sanchez will perform during the opening reception. Along with costume and props, Sanchez, a New World senior, will improvise and react to the artist’s combined efforts.
